Often shopping or strolling through a supermarket’s aisle you must have seen these boxes of muesli and granola. You may have also noticed that these are easy breakfast options. For quite a long time we were only aware about flakes as our quick breakfast. Muesli and Granola have now given us wider options to choose from. But what are these two products and what is the difference between granola and muesli?

Granola:

Granola is often looked at as a filling, delicious and healthy breakfast option. It was created by American physician James Caleb Jackson.

Base of the granola contains rolled oats which is similar to muesli. But it may also contain vanilla extract or flavourings.

Granolas are baked. The baking gives Granola a nice crunch. They contain nuts, dried fruits and sweeteners like maple syrup honey or agave syrup.

Granola is often served cold. It is very easy to consume granola and you can make various recipes. You can eat granola with yogurt, make parfaits, have it with milk, or just like that like a snack.

Because of the sugar and nuts content in granola, it is also high in terms of calories. The sugar, no matter which type, adds up to the carb content of granola.

Muesli:

Muesli is a mixture of oats, dried fruits, seeds and nuts. It is considered a healthy breakfast option. Muesli was created by a swiss doctor and nutritionist, Maximillian Bircher-Benner. Muesli is not baked. The ingredients in Muesli are raw and do not have a binding like granola.

Muesli can be eaten as porridge, can be eaten like cereal, you can also soak this in milk overnight and eat it like overnight oats.

Although both, muesli and granola, have the same base of oats, other ingredients can be added. More commonly you will find whole grains like amaranth quinoa added in muesli to make it healthier. While making granola you can also add rice puffs, wheat puffs as they give the added crunch.

Because of its oat base, both these are healthy as they contain beta glucans. Beta glucans are good for gut health. They share similar benefits mainly because the ingredients are similar. You can check the ingredients and choose your favourite breakfast cereal.
