How Your Eating Habits Affect Your Skin
Like how the cover of a book represents the pages of the book, likewise, your dietary habits represent your skin. Many factors come into play when you wonder why your skin is wrinkly or why it does not look nourished or why you have acne. Of course, genetics has a lot to do with the texture of your skin and how it ages. But, another undeniable fact is your lifestyle which depends on what you eat. Smoking, over-working, stress, caffeine, alcohol, etc. are the obvious triggers but let us learn a bit more about what you put into your body and how that affects your skin. We are going to dive into 2 aspects. 1- What are bad foods for your skin and 2- What are good foods for your skin.
Bad foods that affect your skin
- Refined Carbs & Sugar- referring to foods like white bread, pasta, candies, and aerated drinks. These increase your blood sugar levels which affect your skin by breaking out with acne and the aerated drinks dehydrate you, making the skin more wrinkled.
- Excess alcohol- Alcohol, on the whole, is bad for your health. It also dehydrates the skin cells and then leads to dryness. The droopiness and old-looking skin that in turn leads to dullness come when the collagen fibres in the skin break down. Vitamin A is known to build new skin cells and rejuvenate them as well. Alcohol plays an evil role in standing in the way of doing so.
- Dairy Product- Dairy products are great. But, having it in excess is not. Consuming milk that is the by-product of a cow that is injected with hormones has a direct effect on your skin. It creates more oil in the skin and leads to pimples and acne.
- Coffee- Who doesn't love a cup of coffee in the morning? Well, someone who cares about their skin. Although coffee has its benefits, it is known to make the skin age much faster. A stress hormone called cortisol is released when one consumes coffee. But, if this hormone is released incorrectly, it can cause very dry skin and wrinkling
- Processed Sugar- Processed sugar has no health benefits yet is very addictive. This type of sugar tends to cause redness, inflammation, and itchiness of the skin.
Good foods that help your skin
- Water- The skin is the largest organ. It needs plenty of water to stay hydrated and fresh while sweating and other activities throughout the day put your skin through a lot of stress. Water is also important for all your internal organs to function properly.
- Omega-3 Fatty Acids- This is a healthy oil that you get while consuming certain foods such as flax seeds, chia seeds, olive oil, nuts, fish, beans, and spinach to name a few. These help with better production of collagen in the skin which will make your skin smoother in texture, less saggy, and wrinkled. So, if you are suffering from wrinkled, bumpy, and loose skin, this is your sign to consuming more foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids.
- Sunflower seeds- Sunflower seeds are a great source of vitamin E which also happens to be an antioxidant for the skin. It is an underrated skin-boosting agent. If you don’t wanna consume it as it is then you can add a spoonful of these seeds as a topping to your breakfast or try salted sunflower seeds.
- Sweet Potato- Sweet potato contains carotene which works as a natural sunblock. It helps protect your skin from getting sunburned while also protecting dying skin cells which lead to wrinkles.
- Dark Chocolate- this includes cocoa powder which is amazingly high in antioxidants which help the skin look more healthy and also hydrated. It also helps the skin resist twice as strong UV radiation before the skin cells are damaged by the sun. - Green tea- Green tea is known for pushing out toxins in the body. It also has antioxidant properties that protect your skin from the sun. It also helps with the moisture of the skin, removes roughness, and improves the elasticity of the skin that prevents wrinkle formation.
